Summary

From the bestselling author of Everything I Never Told You, a riveting novel that traces the intertwined fates of the picture-perfect Richardson family and the enigmatic mother and daughter who upend their lives。

In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned—from the layout of the winding roads, to the colors of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead。 And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules。

Enter Mia Warren—an enigmatic artist and single mother—who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenaged daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons。 Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair。 But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community。

When old family friends of the Richardsons attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town—and puts Mia and Elena on opposing sides。 Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Elena is determined to uncover the secrets in Mia’s past。 But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs。

Little Fires Everywhere explores the weight of secrets, the nature of art and identity, and the ferocious pull of motherhood—and the danger of believing that following the rules can avert disaster。

The delicious and foreboding setup went largely answered in this not-what-you-think slice of suburbia story。 Maybe I enjoy the anticipation of a story's resolution more than the resolution itself, to imagine as I read in bed the sparks slowly burn to their logical conflagratory conclusion。 But when the threads don't so neatly tie together at the end, I am critical because nothing beats the expectation and imagination of a perfect storm in your head。 That being said, I still immensely enjoyed Ng' The delicious and foreboding setup went largely answered in this not-what-you-think slice of suburbia story。 Maybe I enjoy the anticipation of a story's resolution more than the resolution itself, to imagine as I read in bed the sparks slowly burn to their logical conflagratory conclusion。 But when the threads don't so neatly tie together at the end, I am critical because nothing beats the expectation and imagination of a perfect storm in your head。 That being said, I still immensely enjoyed Ng's work。 Can't wait to see the TV series starring Reese Witherspoon。 。。。more

This was a pick for my book club for the month, and I will admit to not being in the mood for a family drama this month。 I think I would have liked it even more had I been wanting to read something like this。 That said, I did like the book。 It had several complex, interesting characters。 I am a mother myself, and books like this always make me take a step back and evaluate my own relationships with my children。 It's also one of those books where I wasn't really sure who I was rooting for the who This was a pick for my book club for the month, and I will admit to not being in the mood for a family drama this month。 I think I would have liked it even more had I been wanting to read something like this。 That said, I did like the book。 It had several complex, interesting characters。 I am a mother myself, and books like this always make me take a step back and evaluate my own relationships with my children。 It's also one of those books where I wasn't really sure who I was rooting for the whole time, and I haven't decided yet how I feel about the ending。 It definitely gave me a lot to think about, even after I finished the book。 。。。more

This just felt。。。 preachy! The author was so heavy handed in telling us Mia = good, all others = bad, rather than just letting the story happen。 I enjoyed the story line around May Ling / Mirabelle。 But all the teenagers。。。 I couldn’t tell one from the other! They way the POV kept shifting didn’t help。 I skim read the parts about Mia’s art/art school and Mia’s mentor - so much unnecessary detail。 It was like the grits from Where The Crawdads Sing all over again!

This book was incredibly well crafted in terms of scene sequences。 The content is rich。 There are no wasted words。 The many themes and issues are thought-provoking and challenging and too often avoided in our society。 The original artwork described by the author was incredibly touching, and it would be amazing if in the future there was an edition of this book that had illustrations of Mia's photographs。 I am trying not to watch the miniseries based on this book, because I hate ruining my memory This book was incredibly well crafted in terms of scene sequences。 The content is rich。 There are no wasted words。 The many themes and issues are thought-provoking and challenging and too often avoided in our society。 The original artwork described by the author was incredibly touching, and it would be amazing if in the future there was an edition of this book that had illustrations of Mia's photographs。 I am trying not to watch the miniseries based on this book, because I hate ruining my memory of my favorite books by watching the adaptations。 I'm also planning to read Ng's first book based on my appreciation for Little Fires Everywhere。 。。。more

I felt like the first part just spoiled the end of the book, instead of adding mystery or suspense。 2。 There's a lot of extra context needed。 Meaning, you know the event happened and exactly what happened, but you can't understand why until you read the rest。 This is kind of true for this book, but the 'why' boils down to what was implied at the beginning。 Izzy got mad and burned the house down。 Perhaps this is just that I didn't feel like Izzys actions were totally justified (by which I mean the context doesn't have the kidn of escalation I expected to result in a girl burning down her own house and running away)。 The only real additional context in my opinion is that we find out izzy isn't really 'crazy' or unhinged, but even then, she did do a pretty crazy thing。 Overall I feel like the fire was kind of misplaced? It feels like the author had that vision in mind and tried to write a story that would fit it。 This kind of leads to the last reason I can think of。 3。 The ending is so unrealistic/unexpected that you need to introduce it early so that the readers don't feel like it's pulled out of your ass at the end。 I'm not saying this book did this 100%, but try to imagine how the book would read if she had just left the fire/ running away scene to the end。 It just seems very soap-opera-y for a story thats very grounded in reality up until that point。 In real life, rich 15 year old girls do not do that unless they have serious mental health issues, which izzy does not。 not that a crazy ending bad thing, but if the ending is that dramatic, I generally would expect a greater escalation。 Alternatively, if you decided to have no escalation but still put the crazy ending, it could be kind of goofy but it would still pack a very powerful punch。 Between the fires, the running away, and the kidnapping, I feel like the ending could have left me floored if i didn't know where it was going (yes it would be very soap oper-y, but it would be so much fun I wouldn't care)。 But as it was I didn't really give a shit about the ending, because the last pages were just reexplaining something I knew was going to happen。 I did really like the parallel between Elena and Bebe at the end, though。 。。。more
